Ninja, spies, native scouts are the kind of spies that each nation can have. These are a lot of fun to use and when you pull off using them just right you really do feel like a tactical mastermind! There are a few other new additions as well such as the fire pit dances which are kind of neat and the new way the game handles The Aztecs greatly expands them which I thought was really neat.

I really think that this is a great expansion to an already great game. On the surface it may not look like Age Of Empires 3: The Warchiefs adds in a ton of content, but what it does it does very well and that makes it well worth playing. You can get a complete version of Age of Empires 3 that has this and the follow-up expansion and, in all honesty, if you ask me that is the best way to experience this game.

The story alone is worth playing through and one of the most interesting AOE stories that they ever did in my opinion. While Ensemble Were concentrating on putting the final touches to their Stetsons and swinging saloon doors in Age Of Empires III, they only offered a cursory glance at the native population.

Now, they’ve set about putting that right in this expansion by featuring three native American tribes; the Sioux, the Iroquois and the Aztecs. As well as the expected units and buildings associated with a new race, the three tribes all have access to a Fire Pit which villagers dance around to procure new bonuses, from producing healer units to increasing the strength of your troops.

This offers a new slant on tactics and with each tribe specialising in different areas the Sioux, for example, have a very strong cavalry , the new races are well-balanced and a joy to play. The new campaign follows the saga of the Black family and is presented with all the slickness you’ve come to expect from Ensemble, with a host of historically based and well-varied missions. There are also a slew of other additions, many either new for the Europeans or aimed at balancing the new races in multiplayer.

If youre looking to expand either your single or multiplayer experience of AOE3, WarChiefs proves itself to be a slick affair and caters well for series fans. However, it still doesn’t address the simplistic combat and will make a full game-sized dent in your wallet, thus still leaving us, a bit like the tribes, with some reservations.

In its third showing, the gameplay refinement is clearly present along with new features that are integrated seamlessly. Adding an expansion pack was only a matter of time and although it took awhile, Age of Empires: War Chiefs has made its appearance. Expansion packs often go one of two ways. Either an entirely new gameplay feature is added, often to fix gameplay imbalances or slip in a feature that wasn’t ready for the initial release, or new content is added without significant changes to the gameplay.

Age of Empires: War Chiefs falls into the second category which isn’t a bad thing when the original gameplay is already well balanced and has depth. There are a few new building and features to take advantage of such as the fire pit which gives nice bonuses and a new victory condition based on trading monopolies but if you take the fresh coat of paint off, it’s still the same basic game.

Again, when the core game starts out as strong as AoE III, tinkering with the gameplay can cause more problems but Age of Empires: War Chiefs isn’t going to offer an entirely new experience either. One aspect that helps to bring a new feel however is the campaign missions. The first act, Fire , follows Nathaniel Black John Black’s son and Amelia’s father as he spends most of the family’s fortune supporting the American Revolution.

It includes the Battle of Bunker Hill. This occurs between the second and third acts of the original campaign. The second act, Shadow follows the story of Amelia Black ‘s son, Chayton Black , and opens during Red Cloud’s War , after act three of the original campaign.

Few changes have been made to Ensemble Studios online. Existing accounts have gained a WarChiefs statistics section. A new account is not necessary or even allowed.

This is probably to prevent two accounts being used by one person. Players Home Cities and levels will carry over with the ability to reselect cards, although all rankings and other stats will be reset. There is a new victory condition, called the “Trade Monopoly”, similar to the Wonder condition in earlier games.

If a player or team controls more than half of the trading posts in the Industrial or Imperial Age, they can start a timer, for an amount of food , wood , and coin. The other team must destroy trading posts until the team with the trade monopoly holds less than half of the trading posts. If the other team does not destroy enough trading posts before the countdown expires, the player or team who started the countdown will win.

Note that the team which started the timer cannot build more trading posts during the timer’s effect. A Revolution feature is included as well. Instead of going to the Imperial Age , you may choose to have a revolution which is cheaper, yet riskier. After this revolution your settlers change to Colonial Militia and you cannot produce any more Settlers , stagnating your economy.

The advantage of a revolution is that it gives your military a boost, allowing you to gain the upper hand and to break a tight battle. But if your initial attacks fail, your inferior economy will allow your enemy to defeat you more easily. Once one side has had a revolution, it is no longer an option for the opposing team, and they can only go to the Imperial Age.

Instead of the European ‘ Explorer ,’ the native tribes receive a ‘War Chief,’ who provides more versatility throughout the game. For example, the War Chief provides a bonus to the units around him, potentially turning the tide of battle See New units. War Chiefs also have the ability to convert Treasure Guardians , such as bears and pirates, to the player’s cause, instead of having a special ability to kill guardians like the Explorer has.

The War Chief have a larger late-game influence than the Explorer , but are more expensive to resurrect this takes much work of Villagers at the Fire Pit. Another feature for the expansion, is the use of Stealth mode. All natives can use this ability from the beginning, as one unit per native civilization can become invisible to the enemy this cannot be activated when enemy units are nearby.

They share the stealth ability, as do other miscellaneous units Ninjas , Native Scouts , etc. Though when near to an enemy outpost or Town Center the unit will become visible.

The Home City system has been slightly altered as well. Decks can now go over 20 cards by allowing one extra card every ten levels of the Home City with a maximum of 25 cards. They all offer different units, supports, and improvements.

All these items are very similar to the European Home Cities. The Aztec use Tenochtitlan as Home City. The Iroquois also starts the game with one Travois , which can transform into most Iroquois buildings. The Fire Pit is available to all Native civilizations.
